The Ten books

The ten books

The ten books I would choose would be Sword Art Online, Shokugeki no Soma, Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Percy Jackson books, Ready Player One, Naruto, Ender Games, Hobbit, and Harry Potter.

Sword Art Online is a novel, anime and Manga / graphic novel. The story moves around a character name Kirito.  He is trapped in a game with many players. He tries to find a way out of the game and tries to save people lives through out the story.

Shokugeki no Soma is an anime and Manga/ graphic novel. It tells about this middle school kid going to a top cooking school. His goal is to be in the top 10 best cooking people. He faced many challenges in a cooking battle but manages to win.

Ender’s Game is a novel book and a movie.  The book talks about a kid named Ender. He is persuaded to join the  military academy in space. Here he trains with other kids to fight a war in space because of an alien invasion.Where other kids must fight for war in space because of an imminent alien invasion.

Hunger Games is a book and a movie. The story talks about twelve different districts who send their two best people to participate in the Hunger Games.  The story revolves around a girl character named Katniss Everdeen. This story tells about 12 different districts. Each year they celebrate the annual hunger games. The Hunger  Games take place because there is no war but peace.  Each district’s best two people fight in this arena by giving up there lives for their district. Each district has a specific job to do in the government.  District 12 encompasses a poor town where the main character lives and hunts to survive. Katniss and other districts try to stop District 1 from governing them.

Maze Runner is a movie and a book. The story centers around a kid name Thomas. He was placed in this huge maze with other kids. In the story the main character and the other kids try to find a way out of the maze.  Unfortunately, there are creatures that roam the maze at night and the kids learn to outsmart them.

Percy Jackson is a movie and a book.  The story uses Greek mythological characters to tell the story.  This book inspired be because one of the scenes makes Percy challenge the Greek Gods.

Harry Potter was one of my first books to read.  It is about a boy named Harry Potter who was very famous because he defeated the dark lord a long time ago. This story takes place in an alternate world in England., mystical creatures and  There are wizards, mystical creatures and many magically gifted people in this story.

Hobbit is a movie and book. It is a fantasy story life about a guy name Bilbo Baggins. Ho is a Hobbit. One day a group of dwarves came to his house in need of his help to take them back to their there home land. This story used many different races  to create a fascinating book.

Ready Player One is one of my favorite books that I read this year.  It talks about a virtual reality world. I liked the virtual reality in this book  because it is similar to the Sword Art online because of its story line.

Vampire in the Lemon Grove

Vampire in the Lemon Grove
The voice for Magerbs

Magrebs’ voice in the story was like a train without a conductor.  She would keep yapping until she tried to stop. She would brag and then would angry. She would be bossy until her husband arrived.  She would worry about him. She is stubborn and impatient like a child in this story. She speaks in a low voice with very few words to say. It sometimes would be unintelligible for her, too.

media

Create your own illuminated page that embodies one of your own observations about media.

My own observations are about video games as a part of the huge media industry.
I am a video game artist who is majoring in game art and design. Video games have a massive impact on media because of the internet. The video games are playable on the PC, MAC, mobile apps and consoles that connect to the internet.  The internet allows players to connect to the latest games as well as other players online. Video games provide an opportunity for the gamer to role play in different scenarios. For example, the gamer may play as a first person shooter in MMORPG games. I believe many people use this media to interact with and within the digital world.
I would like to design video games that are based on fantasy worlds, futuristic worlds and even traditional worlds. I would like to have my video games be beautiful and amazing so my audience would appreciate their experience.

In the video game industry, there are lots of components needed to make a video game.  To name a few there are the creators, the illustrators, the computer animation, the sound effects and production managers.  All these specialized people collaborate to create a single game for the video game industry.

In this picture it show the truth about Trump. What he says is mostly hateful, usurped and unkind.
This is a comical depiction about Donald Trump and its from Scooby Do cartoon.

In the first picture it shows the Scooby Do gang capturing Donald Trump. The gang looked very happy, but Donald Trump’s face expressed disgust and anger.

In the second picture they try to unmask Donald Trump by pulling his hair.

In the third picture it shows rats telling the truth that Donald Trump hates and wants for the American people:
  • He talks about building a wall between Mexico and the USA
  • Talks of deporting people out of the country.
  • Last, he talks about women and their age and looks.
This example shows his true feelings and opinions about other people.

This is one of the funniest graphic comics I found about Donald Trump.

I chose this cartoon because it is very funny and it illustrates Donald Trump’s real  truth in his speeches. Also, I chose this cartoon because it is a very graphic comic about the Scooby Do gang finding out the truth about him. The rats represent the hatred and the despicable ideas that Donald Trump has about other people.

The author I choose was Akira Kurosawa. The movies I picked from him were Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood and Tsubaki Sanjuro.
Seven Samurai takes place in Japan. The story is about the government attempting to take the land from rice farmers. The farmers seek a way to the government from taking their land and their rice. They seek the help from samurai to protect their land but only have rice to offer as payment. The farmers found it difficult to hire samurai because the government was watching over them. However, one samurai came to their aid and stood against the government. His name was Takeshi Shimura. In the story, the farmers and Takeshi manage to get six other samurais to help their fight against the government. In the end five samurai die for the cause, leaving only Takeshi and a younger samurai live to tell the story.
Throne of Blood focused on two samurai lost in a sacred forest.  They encounter a mysterious woman in white who tells them about their futures. This mysterious person tells the first samurai his fortune. She tells him how he will be the Emperor in the North.  Then she tells the second samurai his fortune.  He would be the Emperor of the Forest of the Clan. This story is similar to Macbeth by Shakespeare because it has the same story structure.  In this story, the medieval knights in Macbeth are replaced with samurais. The three witches in Macbeth are replaced by one spirit in Throne of Blood. The themes in the stories are similar. The emperor and king are killed.  In the end of Throne of Blood, the first samurai, Emperor of the North died just like Macbeth in Macbeth.
Tsubaki Sanjuro focused on a group of samurai, who supposed killed one of the emperors from a different clan but untrue. So the emperor tries to go after those people by taking away their land. The samurai group did not know what to do. One man who was a Ronan came to their aid. He was there to save the people and their land.  In the end they manage to get their land back from the emperor and kill him.

Akira Kurosawa focuses on ancient Japan.  His films revolve around three groups of people: the emperor and his men, the peasant or farmers and the samurais.   Through out the three films there appears a struggle for power. The author points to re-appearing themes of betrayal, lies and killings involving the emperor,s the peasants and samurai in ancient Japan in all three movies.

             My Brother, the Reluctant Swimmer

One of my mother’s philosophies regarding her sons was: “If you can walk well and run well, then you will swim well.” When my brother, Tobey was about four years old, my mother told me that Tobey refused to put his head in water at the Maui YMCA pool and learn how to swim.  He told her to go put her head in the water. My mother was determined to make sure my brother would learn to swim at an early age.  He did not want to swim.  He was just happy with splashing the water at the pool or at the beach.  At the beaches in Maui, he would just play in the sand at the edge of the surf.  He would never venture deeper than his knees despite my mother watching both of us like a hawk.
As a drastic measure, my mother enrolled my brother in the Maui YMCA swim camps during the summer.  She figured that maybe peer pressure would do the trick.  At the end of several summers, he was only able to swim one or two strokes and for short distances.  He would always say, “I hate the water!”
The first summer after we moved to California, my mother enrolled both of us in the Nike Swim Camp at Stanford University.  In the Stanford parking lot, my mother and him were butted heads.  He would not even get out of the car. Ultimately, she won and got him settled in the dorm room and she left for home. He swam because of the swim coaches and peer pressure.  I think the only saving grace at the swim camp was the dorm cafeteria. He liked the food and could eat as much
as he wanted.
The following summer my mother enrolled us both into a local swim team.  He just did the minimum.  This did not last long because my mother’s work schedule prevented us from getting to regular practices. Boy, was he relieved and happy!
Finally, when he got into high school my mother convinced him to join the water polo team.  She actually bribed him with a goal of getting a MacBook Pro laptop.  He had to complete several summers of swimming and several seasons of water polo.  The several summers of swimming meant sending both of us to my aunt for the summer.  My aunt lived in Oceanside, CA.  We were enrolled in the Oceanside Junior Lifeguard program.  Tobey had to learn to swim in the ocean, swim in the rough surf, swim around the Oceanside Pier and swim back to shore after jumping off a speeding boat.  There was a lot of competition from male peers and female peers. The peer pressure really had an impact on him and he survived that summer.
In his second season of high school water polo, he met my mother’s requirement in swimming.  He got his MacBook Pro laptop.  He still continued to whine, “I hate the water!”  Then the following summer, my mother enrolled us again for the Oceanside Junior Lifeguard program.  But to the surprise of my entire family: my aunt, my uncle, my two cousins (who by the way are Oceanside Lifeguards) and myself, Tobey decided at the last minute, literally the few minutes before the competition at the beach was going to begin, he decided to tryout for one of the Junior Lifeguard Assistant positions for the summer.  He was not physically prepared for the tryouts.  His last water polo game was seven month earlier. The competition was stiff.  However, he did finish and got to be a Junior Lifeguard Assistant.

After playing three years of water polo with me, my mother thought Tobey would quit playing water polo.  But to my mother’s surprise and mine as well, Tobey played water polo in his senior year in high school.  To top if off, he won the Armijo Sports scholarship from our high school.  Now to surprise us again, my mother just told me that Tobey is taking scuba diving lessons at his college.  Is this my brother, Tobey, the reluctant swimmer?

Your work of voice

My voice in my work focuses on mythical or traditional art, and water. My art work focuses on Japanese art style like anime or realistic art of painting, but with a fantasy touch to it. I do a lot of digital work that focuses on characters and environments. It is based on  Japanese culture while mixing fantasy work in it.
My other voice is the water. Most of my art work focus on the ocean, lakes, rivers and other things that relate to water. Water reminds me of Hawaii. Sitting on the beach and staring at the sunset. The water feels warm reminding me of a fantasy life under water. I enjoy showing this work to other people to show how life is so calm staring at the ocean and watching the sunset. I usually paint or draw/ color the beach in Hawaii. I feel this nice vibe of calmness just sitting there giving me a body of work.

Assessment short story

1. Are there any prominent symbols in the story?
If so, what are they and how are they used?

Yes I believe there is prominent in this story. Story kept leading into a direction about the author life. He gave some examples or clues throughout the story, telling where he went and what he was doing there. Also he was trying to write to some person he loves so much, but he felt something was missing. Like in this example " I understand why you left, that first time. You knew there was something missing and i knew it too. I just couldn't tell you." In this part I felt that the author was missing something between him and that person. I also felt that there was emotion in this love story.

2.What connection did you make with the story? Discuss the elements of the work with which you were able to connect.

The story to me felt like a diary or a letter to me. It also felt heart breaking and memories of the time he had spent with that person that he loved so much.
He gave details of memories of his life and clues what he did.
The thing that worked for me as a connection in this story was the clues.
 Example:
" I am recording this because I just gave you the key to my place, and although we've had "boundary talk" several times these things will happen and I wanted to have a chance to explain."
In this part he wanted his lover to go to his house and tell about his feelings, saying sorry. This part made a connection for me because it felt like a long distance relationship between each other.

3. what changes would you make to adapt this story into another medium? What medium would you use? What changes would you make?

I would change the wording and give it cursive writing. The medium I would preferrer to this story would be a letter. I would have the location of the place and tell about his lover more and describe the time. Not just jumping around the place, like it was hard to understand what time or place he was going at.
The story that I choose for my graphic novel is Sarcastic. The graphic novel consisted of black and white drawings. The drawings were poorly drawn, however they demonstrated great gesture and emotion in the character’s eyes and body.  Sarcastic is based on a true story about a girl named Marj.  She lived in Iran and it takes place during the Islamic Revolution. She writes about what was going on in her life and how the Islamic Revolution was affecting her daily life. While reading this book, I felt depressed.  I was appalled that the main character, Mari, had to live
a very hard and controlled life in Iran.  For example, at school Mari and the other female students had to wear a veil that covered their head and face. Everyday she had to wear the veil because it was a traditional in her country for females to be covered. If caught without the veil in public, it was as if she was betraying her country and the rules of her country. Her school was also expected to obey all the laws. They had to pledge to their king everyday. She and the other students were taught religion at school.

Subsequently in the book, Marj discovers some of her interests. One interest was in Communism.  She did not know that much about Communism, but she was really interested to learn more about it.  Another interest was that she wanted to be a Prophet, but the other children around her laughed at this notion.  I felt Mari was misled because of the conflict caused by the revolution in her country.  She observed her mother and her father leaving home to attend protests in the streets to fight for their rights in Iran’s economy. Eventually, these protests turned into riots.  Many of the protesters were put in jail or shot by Islamic military. She did not know what was really happening. I think she was scared, so she would talk to her God in the night..  She told him about what was right and what was wrong with the revolution.  At the end of this conversation with God, she would ask for help.

Ready player one

For this assignment I chose this huge paragraph from the text that talked about virtual reality video games (VRVG) Ready Player One.
In this paragraph:
“Holiday and Morrow referred to the OASIS as an “open- source reality,” a malleable online universe that anyone could access via the Internet, using their existing home computer or video games console. You could log in and instantly escape the drudgery of your day-to-day life.
You could create an entirely new person for yourself, with complete control over how you looked sound to other. In OASIS, the fat become thin, the ugly could become beautiful, and the shy, extroverted. Or vice versa. You could change your name, age, sex, race, height, weight, voice, hair color, and bone structure. Or you could cease being human altogether, and become an elf, ogre, alien, or any other creature form literature, movies, or mythology.
In the OASIS, you could become whomever and whatever you wanted to be, without ever revealing your true identity, because your anonymity was guaranteed.
Users could also alter the content of the virtual worlds inside the OASIS, or create entirely new one. A person’s online presence was no longer limited to a website or a social-networking profile. In the OASIS, you could create your own private, planet, build a virtual mansion on it, furnish and decorate it however you liked, and invite a few thousand friends over a party. And those friends could be in a dozen different time zones, spread all over the globe.”

I like this paragraph because you are trying to escape from reality. It is my dream to come to this new virtual reality world because I like video games and I am a game designer. I would have fun spending time in this game world for hours and making my own fantasy life.
I also like about where you can create your own world and your own character and also talk to other people around the globe by using the Internet.

The only problem is that I don't like about the game is hiding your identity form anyone. You don't know if that person is a criminal or a theft. Knowing that there are a lot of hackers and identity theft trying to do something you.

week 7 Dewbreaker

What are the primary features of this world--spatial, cultural, biological, fantastic, cosmological

Dominique Flemings

In Dominique’s worldbuilding, he compared the culture of his homeland in Europe (Italy, England, Germany, Spain, and Holland) to the many cultures in America. Then he talks about the color of his skin.  He gives a detailed description comparing his skin to the skin of people of a mixed race having different cultures in America. The primary features of Dominique’s world are cultural and biological.

For comparison, I read Edwidge Danticat's Dewbreaker. The story takes place in Florida where a little girl name “Ka” wakes up from her sleep alone in a hotel room.  “Ka” was born and raised in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, but had moved to Florida with her father. She notices that her father has left the hotel room with her amazing statue that she made.  In the story, we are told that her father likes Egyptian culture. When he was in New York, he loved to go to the Brooklyn Museum where it housed Ancient Egyptian artifacts. He told Ka that “The Egyptian worshiped their gods in many forms, fought among themselves, and were often ruled by foreigners.” She remembered that her father admired the Ancient Egyptian ways because they mourn their dead. He said, “They are known as grieve.” Her father named her “Ka” because it sounded more Egyptian-like. Other than this, Ka did not know that much about her father.

In another excerpt from Edwidge Danticat's Dewbreaker, I focused on the following: “the Cuban woman who is over, polite, making up her lack of English with deferential gestures: a great big smile, nod, even a bow as she backs out of the room. She reminds me of my mother when she has to work on non-Haitian clients at Barely beauty shop, how she pays much more attention to those clients, forcing herself to laugh at jokes, she barely understands and smiles insults she doesn't quite grasp, all to avoid being forced into a conversational knowing she couldn't hold up her end very well.”

Edwidge Danticat’s worldbuilding in Dewbreaker focused on cultural features rather than biological features. We see this when Ka describes her name and her father’s fascination on Ancient Egypt.  We see this she describes her mother working in the beauty shop.  The behaviors she describes are all cultural based and do not focus on biological features seen in Dominique’s worldbuilding.

Phantasy
ファンタジー

“Enter a new mystical fantasy world, filled with different types of fantasy creatures, fighting as a samurai worrier. Will you be the one to conquer this new world? The test is ON!”

My theme is about a fantasy world filled up of different types of fantasy creatures. We have the human, elf, wizard, mermaid, orc, golem, and dragon. Also the theme will take part in early Japan when samurais are around. Each fantasy creature is drawn as an anime samurai worrier in the game.

The setting I choose for my game board is early Japan, in the Edo period. The samurai worriers from different families/ groups are battling each other.
